Left behind

January has been a month of leaving things behind. It started with us all leaving 2006 behind, but I have also left my boyfriend's old apartment behind, left my Alki apartment with its Puget Sound view behind, left my thirties behind, left my carless state behind (finally!), left dial up behind (doubly finally!!). Tonight, I accidentally left most of the "Important" stuff behind. When I left the restaurant where I had dinner, I left my bag with my wallet, cell phone (currently my only phone), the quarters I'd gotten to do laundry tonight, my journal, and all the other things I like to have with me when I'm out and about.

I realized my mistake on my way home, but by the time I rushed back (maybe 15 minutes after I'd left), they were all closed up (they'd closed early, right after serving us, but were cleaning up when we left). My bag wasn't where I'd left it so hopefully they had found it. I trekked back to my boyfriend's and used his cell phone. Answering machine.

My boyfriend provided me with comfort, quarters for laundry, and some cash, but I've had this slimed feeling since it sunk in that I wasn't getting my stuff back tonight. Not even getting the reassurance that I will get it back. I wish I wasn't taking it this hard, but I am.

I've been thinking a lot about how the bad stuff always seems to get more attention than the good stuff, but I guess I get pretty good mileage out of the good stuff. And at least I had my boyfriend's assorted support, I still have the temporary driver's license I got with my new address (the real one was in my wallet), and I've been able to IM with folks in lieu of phone calls.

Still, I'll feel much better when me and my Important stuff are reunited.
